Diagnose Electrical Problems Before Replacing Motors
Powered step sliders rely on a straightforward chain: battery power, protected wiring, a solid ground, a trigger signal, a controller or relay where applicable, and a functioning motor. A break anywhere in that chain can make the motor look guilty.
Begin by checking the fuse or circuit protection specified for the system. Then inspect connections for dirt, moisture, corrosion, or terminals that have backed out of the connector body. Check harness routing near moving components, sharp edges, exhaust heat, and suspension travel. If you use a multimeter, verify voltage and ground at the motor connection while the system is commanded to operate. No power at the connector points upstream. There are times when replacement of a larger assembly is the better choice. Severe impact damage, multiple bent components, repeated electrical failures caused by a compromised harness path, or corrosion that has affected structural mounting areas can make piecemeal repairs less practical. Be honest about the condition of the system and the use your rig will see next.
